Dale Earnhardt Signing Danny Whitfield Corvette Art Prints!

Prior to the passing of Racing legend Dale Earnhard, Danny had the fortunate opportunity of taking photo’s of this autograph session. The event was for the National Corvette Museum’s celebration. As you can see Dale had almost everything in the museum thrown at him for autographs. On the table to right are 2 of Danny’s Corvette prints created for the Corvette Manufacturing plant celebration. Dale was so kind to autograph both of them. Of course those prints are priceless now!

Artist proofs of Danny’s concept Dodge Viper and the production Dodge Viper painting introduced at the 1993 Detroit Auto show.These are actual signatures of Chrysler former “Dream team”. This took place at the 1993 Detroit north American auto show! What your looking at are artist proofs of the Dodge Viper painting still in the artist possession! Danny was invited as a guest to sit with the top brass at Chrysler’s Auto exhibit.The three signatures are: Bob Lutz, (former Chrysler president), Thomas Gale (former head of Design) and Francios Casting, (Former chief engineer).They were known as “Chrysler’s mighty Dream Team” of the 90’s until Mercedes-Benz manufacturer Daimler-Benz of Stuttgart, Germany merged with them in 1998. A prize anyone who love the Dodge Viper sports car!

Robert Lutz, Bob Lutz was CEO of Exide Technologies and head of Chrysler Corporation’s Global Product Development, including the very successful Dodge Viper and LH series cars. Lutz was also an Executive Vice President at Ford Motor Company, where he led the creation of the Ford Sierra, initiated development of the original Ford Explorer, and a Member of Ford’s Board of Directors. He was a frequent internal political rival of eventual Ford CEO Red Poling. Prior to working at Ford he served as Executive Vice President of sales at BMW[5] for three years, and he takes some credit in the development of the BMW 3-Series. He joined BMW after eight years with GM in Europe. While at General Motors, Lutz championed the import of the Holden Monaro to the United States as the Pontiac GTO. Other cars such as the Cadillac Sixteen Concept; Saturn Sky and Pontiac Solstice; Pontiac G8; Chevrolet Malibu; Cadillac CTS; Buick Enclave; Cadillac Converj Concept; Cadillac CTS Coupe Concept; Chevrolet Camaro; Chevy Beat, Groove and Trax Concept Studies; and 2010 Buick Lacrosse, Chevrolet Equinox, and Cadillac SRX are said to be Lutz initiatives. Lutz has also emphasized a need to produce fuel efficient vehicles, backing the 2010 Chevrolet Voltt which is estimated to gain up to 100 mpg.

Tom Gale is an automobile designer from the USA, best known for his work with the Chrysler, Dodge and Plymouth marques. He was most associated with the Chrylser LH series cars which introduced the cab forward design into large sedans, and the sports cars, the 1991 Dodge Stealth, the 1992 Dodge Viper, and the 2001 Plymouth Prowler. Gale and his design partners Trevor Creed and John Herlitz were instrumental with breakthrough designs that rescued Chrysler twice from the brink of bankruptcy.

The Dodge Viper was conceived as a historical take on the classic American sports car. The iconic AC Cobra was a source of inspiration, and the final version of the Viper bears this out with its powerful engine, minimalist straightforward design, muscular and aggressive styling, and high performances. The Viper was initially conceived in late 1988 at Chrysler’s Advanced Design Studios. The following February, Chrysler president Bob Lutz suggested to Tom Gale at Chrysler Design that the company should consider producing a modern Cobra, and a clay model was presented to Lutz a few months later. Produced in sheet metal by Metalworkers,the car appeared as a concept at the North American International Auto Show in 1989. Public reaction was so enthusiastic, that chief engineer Roy Sjoberg was directed to develop it as a standard production vehicle. Sjoberg selected 85 engineers to be the “Team Viper,” with development beginning in March 1989. The team asked the then-Chrysler subsidiary Lamborghini to cast some prototype aluminum blocks based on Dodge’s V10 truck engine for sports car use in May. The production body was completed in the fall, with a chassis prototype running in December. Though a V8 was first used in the test mule, the V10, which the production car was meant to use, was ready in February 1990.

Yes this an original artist/stylist proposal of Ford’s Maverick that went into production in 1970! One of three final proposals that resulted the production version,the Maverick was originally conceived and marketed as a subcompact “import fighter” intended to do battle with the Volkswagen Beetle and newer Japanese rivals. The Falcon, Ford’s compact offering since 1960, had seen its sales decimated by the introduction of the Mustang in 1964, and despite a redesign in 1966, was unable to meet forthcoming federal motor vehicle standards that would come into effect on January 1, 1970. Consequently, the Falcon was discontinued midway through the 1970 model year, and the Maverick re positioned as Ford’s compact entry.The Maverick’s styling featured the long hood, fastback roof and short deck popularized by the Mustang, on a 103 in (2,600 mm) wheelbase — and featured simple and inexpensive to manufacture pop-out rear side windows rather than roll-down windows.The rendering was saved from being thrown out when the designers were moving to various departments at the Ford Motor Company’s Dearborn location.

Art is subjective and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. These and other clichés are excuses people use to justify their version of what should be considered great imagery. But stunning art is like a beautiful woman, you’ll know it when you see it. You don’t need someone standing over your shoulder in a gallery trying to convince you that the artist’s use of circles and phlegm is the next great thing. Great art doesn’t need to be explained or justified. It needs to be seen. It needs to be taken in and appreciated. And then the artist needs his rightful credit.

Danny Whitfield has been creating stunning masterpieces of Mustangs and Corvettes and just about every other beautiful form on wheels that you can think of for well over 40 years now. Danny was kind enough to do an interview with Mustang Evolution and share with our readers just who Danny Whitfield is and what he offers to the automotive community. Mustang Evolution: So where is Danny Whitfield “the business” located?

Danny: The name of my business is The Automotive Art of Danny Whitfield and I am located in the greater Los Angeles area

Mustang Evolution: What is the easiest way for people to contact you and see your work?

Danny: The easiest is my website,

Mustang Evolution: How long have you been illustrating cars, Mustangs in particular?

Danny: Since 1968

Mustang Evolution: Do you specialize in any specific range of years for Mustangs?

Danny: No, I illustrate Mustangs from the very beginning. From the first 1962 Concept to 2011 and beyond

Mustang Evolution: Do you work exclusively on paper? Do you use any digital media for your work?

Danny: My media consists of crescent 5112 illustration boards, watercolor paint, Painters Classic Digital Media, and Metal.

Mustang Evolution: What sets your artwork apart from other artists?

Danny: The fact that a customer can get his car print tailor made! You don’t have to settle for the usual, “what you see is what you get” print. With my art, a customer gets his car to look like what he wants! It’s the same feeling you get when buying a car at a dealership; you don’t have to take what’s in stock. You order the car with the options you like. It works the same way with a genuine Danny Whitfield print! You don’t have to settle for what’s on the canvas. You can even get the color of your car matched. Every option the car came with for its respective year can be painted right in. You could add wheels, tires, hood scoops and many other parts to be exactly like your car.

Danny: Winsor Newton Designers’ Gouache watercolor paint, Painters-Classic digital software to handle the customizing of the original art.

Mustang Evolution: What kind of turnaround time can you usually produce something in?

Danny: Usually 2 weeks

Mustang Evolution:: How big would you like your name to be in the art community?

Danny: As large as life – not in an egotistical way – just where people could be educated and enjoy automotive art on a grand scale. I would like my art to be recognized in the “fine arts” category instead of being labeled commercial art.
